Prehistory
The stone age of the Paleolithic era was unearthed in Suksudong, Buk-myeon, Ju-in-ri, and it can be seen that people started living in this area early on. In addition, there have been active social differentiations in the area during the Bronze Age, seeing from the Bongsan-ri dwellling sites and many other dolmens and Neolithic period, along with ruins of Jukbyeon-ri and Hupo-ri.
Early Nation Age
In the ear of the early nation, there was a small country called Wu-Jung-Guk [also called Wu-Yu-Guk], it belonged to the Jin-Han alliance among the three Hans, Ma-han·Jin-Han·Byeon-Han. It is presumed to have been submerged in the Saro Kingdom (Silla) in the latter half of the 3rd century to first half of the 4th century.
Three Kingdoms of Korea
Continued to belong to the territory of Silla and was submerged in Goguryeo for a while furing the reign of Jangsu of Goguryeo (468-481). At this time, the area of Uljin was called 'Wujinyahyeon[Gowui or Uhjin] and area of Pyeonghae was called 'Gueneuluhhyeon.'
From Uljin Bongpyeong Sillabi(524), geographical names of 'Geobulmora, Nammijichon, Galsijochon, Adaehaechon' can be seen, from Changnyeong Jinheung Cheok-gyeongbi (monumen batu)(561) it was called 'wuchu.'
Unified Silla Period
During King Gyeongdeok of Silla on his 16th year of reign (757) when gun-hyeons were changed into chinese characters nationwide, Ujinyahyeon was changed to 'Uljin-gun.' As for Sokhyeon, there's 'Haegokhyeon [Haeseo]', during the time of Goguryeo it was called 'Padanhyeon [or Pacha, Papung, Pajo].'
Koryeo Dynasty
In the 23rd year of Gorywo Taejo (circa 940), had provincial governor of Uljin-hyeon, and begin to rule Ulleungdo Island from early Goryeo. The Pyonghae area was changed to 'Pyeonghae-hyeon' in the 23rd year of King Taejo(940) or the 14th year of King Seongjong(995). It became the prevalence of Yeju (now the territorial sea) from Hyeonjong 9th year (1018) to 46th year of King Gojong (1259). During the time of King Chungnyeol, Hwangseo from the county followed along with the king and made a contribution, was elevated to Pyeonghaegun [byname Giseong], which is estimated to be the 23rd year of King Chungnyeol.
Joseon Dynasty
Uljin-Hyeon [byname Seonsa] continued to be prefecture and as Pyeonghae-gun without change of the place name, during the 32nd year of Gojong(1895), due to the political reform in 1894, as the local government was revised, Uljin-hyeon was promoted to Uljin-gun. Ulleungdo, which belonged to Uljin-hyeon, was trenferred to Pyeonghae-gun during the 91th year of King Gojong, separated from Pyeonghae-gun and became Uldo-gun in the year of 1900.
Japanese Colonial Era
1914 - Uljin-gun and Pyeonghae-gun became integrated into Uljin-gun (became 8 myeons from 15 myeons)
Modern Times (Since May 15, 1945)
  • 1953 Established Hupo branch office in Pyeonghae-myeon.
  • 1953 Established Jukbyeon branch office in Uljin-myeon
  • 1963 Uljin-gun, which belonged to Gangwondo, was incorporated into Gyeongsangbuk-do. At this time, Onjeong-myeon Bonsin-ri was transferred to Yeongyang-gun.
  • 1967 Established Hadang branch office in Buk-myeon.
  • 1979 Uljin-myeon elevated to Uljin-eup
  • 1980 Pyeonghae-myeon elevated to Pyeonghae-eup
  • 1983 Part of Seo-myeon, Jeon-gok-ri(whole Seungbu station) tranferred to Bonghwa-gun, Seokpo-myeon.
  • 1986 Jukbyeon branch office in Uljin-eup was elevated to Jukbyeon-myeon, Hupo branch office in Pyeonghae-eup was elevated to Hupo-myeon, became 2 eups, 3 myeons, 1 branch office like today.
  • 1994 As regulation of the jurisdiction of the si-gun borough changes for, Seo-myeon Wangpi-ri Galjeon was tranferred to Yeongyang-gun Subi-myeon Sinam-ri, becoming the same administrative district as now.
  • 2015 Administrative district name changed for Seo-myeon to Geungangsong-myeon, wonnam-myeong to Maehwa-myeon.
